Tulip, ‘Cape Cod’

Cape Cod’ Tulip is a greigii tulip that features compact blooms of vivid orange and yellow that are set on sturdy, thick stems. It is perfect for planting in rock gardens and at the front of borders and is very wind and rain resistant. This variety is low growing, with long-lasting bright flowers and leaves that are mottled a darker green to brown. It is a pretty presence in the garden well before blooming, as the mottled leaves are decorative in and of themselves. ‘Cape Cod’ is much shorter than the regular tulips, its flower stem is only about a foot tall, but the bloom is large and wide, a half-foot wide when fully opened. Varieties bloom in April. This small tulip is effective in small groupings of at least 12-15 bulbs or massed into large drifts.

Greigii Tulips: Greigii hybrids are more robust than many other tulips, and may be left permanently in the ground to multiply. Just like so many other tulips, Greigii Tulips also comes from Turkistan. Since its introduction in 1872, great numbers of cultivated forms have been developed. This process is still under way and will no doubt continue long into the future. This group is currently the largest group of tulips closely related to (derived from) botanical species. The principle colors are red, yellow and white. Combined with their stunning spotted and striped leaves, these flower colors create an unforgettable visual impact. The flowers, large in proportion to the plant’s total height, open wide in the full sun. These qualities make Greigii tulips unsurpassed for use in borders, rock gardens, and in pots. The fact that this little tulip naturalizes so easily is certainly another big advantage.
