General Information +

Botanical: Tradescantia x andersoniana 'Valour'

Common: Spiderwort

Family: Commelinaceae

General Characteristics: This spiderwort garden hybrid is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial. Red-purple flowers. Great tufted perennial with grass like foliage for sun to part shade producing multitudes of flowers from late spring through summer. When the stems of spiderworts are cut, a viscous stem secretion is released which becomes threadlike and silky upon hardening (like a spider's web), hence the common name. They can be combined with other Spiderwort colors or in drifts in the border. There is little care other than cutting out old flowers and a low cut in winter to renew foliage.

Planting/Care Instructions +

Pests or Diseases: Deer-resistant. No serious insect or disease problems. Young shoots are susceptible to snail damage. Foliage often sprawls in an unattractive manner by mid-summer.

Planting Instructions: Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly. Grow in average, medium to wet, well drained soil in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, acidic, humusy soils. Tolerant of boggy soils. Divide clumps when they become overcrowded. Foliage declines after flowering and should then be cut back almost to the ground to encourage new growth and a possible fall bloom.
