Dryopteris spinulosa ‘Toothed Wood Fern’

The ‘Toothed Wood Fern’ is vase-like and symmetrical, nearly evergreen, lacey and delicate. This is a fern that seems suited to almost any part of the garden with its willingness to thrive in areas with some sun to part shade from slightly moist to downright boggy. A large, lacy, woodland fern, that also is well suited for the landscaped shade bed.

Ferns are perfect for the background of the garden or in a woodland setting. Their gracefulness make them especially suited for companions to the Hosta. Performs well in sun but prefers partial shade.

General Information +

Botanical: Dryopteris spinulosa

Common: Toothed Wood Fern'

Family: Dryopteridaceae

General Characteristics: A favorite for its gorgeous color and frilly fronds to 18 inches in very graceful, mounding circular clumps. It has a delicate boldness that's quite appealing. This is partially evergreen and very adaptable to average, damp or drier conditions when established. A real beauty that just says fern. The narrowly oval blade skyrockets up from the crown making it distinct among the more relaxed habit of its other nearly tri-pinnate relatives.

Planting/Care Instructions +

Pests or Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems.

Planting Instructions: May be planted in any well-drained soil. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly. Provide a growing area in partial shade and with a moist, acid soil. The plant is native to North America. Easy to grow; ascending crown; naturally occurs in swamps and wet woods; full or partial shade.
