‘Sunshine Blue’ is great for southern climates. Blueberries are naturally high in anti-oxidants! With rich sweet berries and suitable for the southern states, ‘Sunshine Blue’ has it all. This semi-dwarf, versatile evergreen blueberry features showy hot pink flowers that fade to white in spring, yielding large crops of delicious berries. ‘Sunshine Blue’ tolerates higher pH soils better than many other blueberries and it is self-pollinizing. ‘Sunshine Blue’ needs less cold weather to produce fruit, making it ideal for Southern gardens, yet still cold hardy enough to perform in much of the North as well.
This is an up-right, compact bush reaching 3′ tall, with blue-green foliage. The foliage turns crimson when cool temperatures arrive in fall. Set plants out as early as possible in the spring. Prune branches back about 1/2 their length at planting time with no further pruning required the next 3 years. Prune annually thereafter during the dormant period. These require fewer chill hours to fruit than the Northern Highbush which require over 1000 hours. ‘Sunshine Blue’ is perfect for smaller gardens and ideal for large patio tubs.
