Astilbe chinensis var. taquetii ‘Superba’

‘Superba’ is a very tall and stately Astilbe with stunning, lavender-pink blooms on strong erect spikes. The coarse, rounded leaves are nicely jagged with a bit of fuzz. The unusual foliage emerges with bold mahogany-red hue, matures to green in summer. Foliage tends to remain attractive all season and if left in place adds interest to the winter garden. ‘Superba’ is one of the latest flowering forms. Astilbe’s brightly colored stately plumes are absolutely spectacular when planted in mass and are one of the most colorful flowers for shade. This is a long-lived perennial to add color to shady areas and is an excellent choice for naturalistic plantings in wooded areas. The faded flowers turn bronze and remain attractive into the fall.

This Astilbe is wonderful for the moist border or planted in mass for a colorful display. Group in shade gardens, woodland gardens and shaded areas of border fronts or cottage gardens. It is also effective on pond or stream banks. This imposing astilbe is also an excellent accent plant. It is one of the more heat tolerant. In autumn, add organic fertilizer or granular slow release fertilizer to the soil surrounding the perennials. These plants often have a period of vegetative rest in the winter; the fertilizer will be useful for the spring vegetative reawakening.

Planting/Care Instructions +

Planting Instructions: May be planted in any well-drained soil. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Prefers moist, humusy, organically rich soils. Soils must not be allowed to dry out. If regularly watered, foliage will usually remain attractive throughout the growing season. A summer compost mulch helps retain soil moisture. Chinese astilbes are generally noted, however, for having better sun and drought tolerance than other species of astilbe. Removing faded flower stalks will not prolong bloom but may improve plant appearance, particularly if a ground cover look is desired. On the other hand, many gardeners leave the flower stalks in place after bloom because of the continuing ornamental interest of the dried seed heads. Astilbes are mainstays of shade and woodland gardens. This astilbe is a bold, very tall plant, which features a dark green foliage, dense panicles of rose-purple flowers on hairy stems.

Pests or Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems. Foliage decline (leaf margins brown up), sometimes with significant dieback, may occur in hot summers and/or periods of drought if soils are not kept moist.
