SUPER PLANT FOR NATURALIZING IN THE LANDSCAPE – Allium 'sphaerocephalon' or "Drumsticks" can be used in borders, perennial beds, as fresh-cut or in dried flower arrangements. An attractive species, easy to grow in full sun, bearing dense clusters of round flower-heads that open green and turn a vibrant clover, magenta-purple in summer then gently fade as summer comes to a close. Try planting it in the gravel garden where it will thrive in the well-drained conditions.
Arising from narrow grassy leaves, the tall and upright, slender stems present these thickset globes of color. Plant at least 18 of these small bulbs among perennial plants such as Hosta, Alchemilla or among ornamental grasses, looks especially great with yellow daylilies. Its compact flower head (scented) also remains decorative after its color fades. Multiplies rapidly in sunny, rich, well-drained soil. It also naturalizes easily. Excellent for use as a cut or dried flower. Attracts butterflies, but deer & rabbit resistant. |
