Heuchera sanguinea is very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Low, non-spreading mounds of foliage topped by airy clusters of small bell-shaped, attractive, flowers. The lush verdant foliage offers a dramatic counterpoint to this Heuchera’s bright crimson flowers. This is a great edging plant and a favorite for the perennial bed. Heuchera sanguinea is a clump-forming coral bells cultivar that is noted for its round, lobed, long-petioled, medium green leaves that form a basal mound (to 8" tall). Plants may spread to 15" wide over the growing season. In late spring to early summer, bright scarlet red flowers bloom in open, airy panicles on slender, wiry stems rising above the foliage mound, typically to 18" tall. These plants look good with Artemisia, ornamental grasses or low ground covers. Long period of bloom, especially if spent blooms are cut. The foliage height on this variety is between 6-12".

Foliage is essentially evergreen in warm winter climates, but the amount of retained foliage color in cold winter climates depends in large part upon the severity of the temperatures. Winter drainage is very important. Prone to frost heave -- loose evergreen bough cover may help. In cold winter climates, a winter mulch applied after the ground freezes will help prevent root heaving. Divide clumps in spring every 3-4 years. Planting instructions: Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly. Best grown in organically rich, humusy, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Performs well in full sun in the north, but prefers some shade (particularly in the heat of the afternoon) in the south. In the southern areas, best foliage color may occur in sunny spots with part afternoon shade. Scorch and general foliage decline usually occur if soils are allowed to dry out. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is particularly important.
