Each kit contains 5 bulbs, a bag of potting medium, and a pot with saucer. One of the easiest ways to fill the winter season with fragrance is to grow Paperwhite Narcissus. This bulb, Narcissus tazetta, is a tender plant, so it won't survive outdoors in most areas of the country. Paperwhites, however, are easy to grow indoors, providing clusters of white or yellow flowers and perfume in the season when we need it most. And unlike most bulbs that require a period of dark, cool temperatures, Paperwhites will grow and bloom without waiting long! Because the bulb stores all the energy it needs to grow and bloom, they are often grown in decorative stones, rather than in soil. They're easy to grow. You don't need a green thumb to produce attractive and fragrant white blooms.
Easy to grow
1. Start with the pot. You should use a sturdy pot that leaves space between the pot and the bulbs. Space the bulbs as close as possible without touching each other or the sides of the container. Plant the bulbs in good quality potting soil or gravel. Do not use a pot that is sharply tapered or very shallow because you want room for decent root growth.
2. Add water so the soil is moist, but not soggy. Do not over water.
3. Paperwhite narcissus like good daylight, but don't want to be in direct sunlight. Temperatures of 60-65 degrees are ideal. If possible, place the growing bulbs in a cool room at night. It takes an average of 4-5 weeks for paperwhites to bloom. When grown warm, the bulbs tend to be taller and weaker, sometimes leaning over.
4. For stronger plants, place your newly planted paperwhites somewhere cool and dark for a week immediately after planting to give them a little extra rooting time before growing.
5. Water on a regular basis throughout the flowering period.
